This doctorate study program is a 100% research-based academic pathway designed for scholars and professionals seeking advanced expertise in Swiss history, governance, society, and international positioning. The Doctorate in History and Swiss Studies is intended for individuals who wish to engage critically with historical processes, institutional development, federal structures, neutrality policy, economic transformation, cultural diversity, and Switzerland’s evolving role in Europe and the global system. The academic structure consists of seven modules:
Four advanced research modules focusing on research design, qualitative and quantitative methodologies, historiography, comparative analysis, academic publishing, and advanced scholarly writing.
Two general doctoral-level modules aimed at strengthening interdisciplinary perspectives, theoretical frameworks, and strategic academic thinking.
One specialized module dedicated specifically to History and Swiss Studies, allowing in-depth exploration of themes such as Swiss federalism, neutrality doctrine, diplomatic traditions, economic history, constitutional development, and Switzerland’s engagement with international organizations.
In addition to the structured modules, the program includes comprehensive thesis and research activities, enabling participants to produce an original and substantial research work that contributes new knowledge to the field.
The duration of the program is +18 months. While a minimum completion period applies, participants benefit from academic flexibility, allowing them to extend their study period in accordance with professional responsibilities and research development needs.
