The Doctorate in Energy Management and Sustainability Strategy (International Focus) is a 100% research-based doctorate study program designed for professionals, researchers, and decision-makers who want to explore advanced knowledge in energy systems, sustainability strategy, environmental responsibility, and long-term organizational transformation. This program is suitable for those who aim to examine complex global energy challenges through serious academic research while building high-level expertise that can support leadership, policy thinking, and strategic development across industries and institutions.

This doctorate study program is academically positioned at a level equal to ISCED and EQF Level 8 and is also equal to the 3rd European cycle. In simple terms, ISCED refers to the International Standard Classification of Education, a global framework used to compare education levels across countries, while EQF means the European Qualifications Framework, which helps explain learning levels and academic progression within Europe. Level 8 represents one of the highest academic and professional learning stages, focused on advanced knowledge, original research, critical thinking, and the ability to contribute new insights to a field of study.

The program is structured for participants who want to investigate how energy management and sustainability strategy are shaping the future of business, government, infrastructure, and society. It reflects the growing importance of energy efficiency, renewable transitions, environmental governance, responsible resource planning, and sustainable innovation in an international context. Learners are expected to engage deeply with current and emerging issues, including strategic energy planning, sustainable operations, climate-aware decision-making, resilience, policy analysis, and the long-term impact of energy choices on economies and communities.

This doctorate study program includes 7 modules, carefully designed to support advanced academic inquiry and independent research development. The structure consists of 4 research-related modules, which strengthen the learner’s ability to design, conduct, evaluate, and present scholarly research at doctorate level. It also includes 2 general modules, intended to broaden academic perspective and strengthen transferable high-level competencies. In addition, 1 module is focused directly on the study field, allowing learners to concentrate specifically on energy management and sustainability strategy as an advanced area of specialization. The program also includes thesis and research activities, which form an essential part of the learning journey and allow participants to develop substantial research in their chosen topic area.

The minimum duration is 18 months, while still offering flexibility for learners who may wish to extend their study period according to their professional and personal commitments. This makes the program especially suitable for adult learners and internationally active professionals who value a flexible yet academically serious structure.

Overall, this doctorate study program is ideal for individuals seeking a high-level academic pathway in a field that is becoming increasingly important worldwide. It offers an opportunity to engage with energy and sustainability not only as technical or environmental concerns, but also as strategic, economic, and global leadership matters. Through a research-focused approach, participants can contribute meaningful knowledge to one of the most critical discussions of our time: how to manage energy responsibly and build more sustainable strategies for the future.
