About
This course provides a structured exploration of the major theoretical frameworks used to understand international relations and global politics. It examines foundational approaches such as realism and neo-realism, which emphasize power dynamics, state competition, and the persistence of conflict within an anarchic international system where states seek to maintain or enhance their position. The course also analyses liberal and neo-liberal perspectives, highlighting the role of cooperation, interdependence, and institutions, and explaining how states may pursue mutual benefits despite the absence of a central authority. Beyond mainstream theories, learners are introduced to alternative and critical approaches, including the English School, Marxism, and critical theory, which explore international society, power structures, and the broader social and philosophical foundations of global politics. The programme further covers constructivism, focusing on how state interests, identities, and international structures are socially constructed rather than fixed, as well as contemporary perspectives such as feminist theory that challenge traditional assumptions about power and knowledge in international relations. Overall, the course equips learners with analytical tools to compare, evaluate, and apply diverse theoretical perspectives to real-world international issues.
